Skye in Focus Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is included in a photography holiday?

Dinner, bed and breakfast for seven days, three hours of individual tuition and a copy of our exclusive Photographer's Guide to Skye.

Can I get extra tuition if necessary?

Yes, if you feel that extra sessions would be beneficial, these can be arranged during your stay.

Are you open all year round?

Yes, subject to availability you are welcome to come any time you like.

What is the best time of year to come to Skye?

The best light will be found between October and March. January to April can give stormy, atmospheric skies and snow-capped mountains. May and June are often the driest and sunniest months. July and August are when the island is invaded by tourists and midges. September to December are the best months for colour.

I don't want to drive all the way to Skye, is this a problem?

Transport is not provided on photo-holidays but there are car hire facilities on Skye and also in nearby Kyle of Lochalsh. Alternatively, you may find it more convenient to pick up a car at Inverness airport. If you do not wish to drive, there is a public transport network covering Skye and with careful use of timetables many parts of the island can be visited.

I would like to bring my partner, but he/she is not a photographer. Are there other things to do on the island?

Yes. There is a range of activities available, including horse riding, golf and a variety of boat trips. Other possibilities include visits to Dunvegan Castle, the Talisker distillery and a variety of workshops, art galleries and craft shops.

Can I come for less than a week?

Yes, but the special photo-holiday package would no longer be available, although you would still be able to purchase tuition and a copy of the guide.

I am a beginner and keen to improve: can I come?

Yes! We can lend you an SLR camera and accessories and show you how to use them, or we can help you to make the most of your existing equipment, whatever it is.

I am an experienced photographer. I don't need tuition. Will I get anything out of it?

Yes, we believe so. Tuition is only part of what we offer. With our detailed knowledge of the island we can ensure that you get to see the most photogenic locations and at the right time of day.

Do you support digital photographers?

Yes! We have a comprehensive digital imaging suite, comprising a brand new Dell computer with Photoshop CS, film and flat-bed scanners, card readers and two dedicated printers. We encourage guests to download and edit their images at the end of each day and can provide facilities for displaying them, for the benefit of fellow guests.
