July on the Isle of Skye

1 July 2017 . . . . I photographed this fly at Skinadin a week or so ago, but it took a while to get an ID.

Urophora jacaena (Picture-winged Fly) A species of fruit fly or tephritid responsible for galls on Centaurea nigra.

18 July 2017 . . . . Over 80 moths in and around the trap this morning. There were 28 species of macro moth and 3 micros. The Snout was the only macro moth that I hadn't seen before.

18 July 2017 . . . . I spent the day exploring the area around Elgol and Glasnakille. I didn't see many butterflies, but did manage to photograph a couple.

21 July 2017 . . . . I went on an insect hunt this afternoon. The only new thing I found was this ladybird (nowhere near any Larches!).

24 July 2017 . . . . Around 80 moths in the trap this morning and around 30 different species, including two new ones.

25 July 2017 . . . . Photographed this fly a few days ago, but just got the ID confirmed this morning. It's a first record for Skye!

Symphoromyia crassicornis (Moorland Snipefly)

25 July 2017 . . . . Another first record for Skye - spotted walking from my car to the house! It feeds on umbellifers. This one had just hopped off the Angelica on to a neighbouring Holly bush.
